Argentina star Emiliano Martinez will compete in the list for the Lev Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper. Paris: Only hours left to know the winner of Ballon d'or 2023.  The award winner will be announced at 11.30 PM IST.  Although the list consists of 30 people, the main competition for the award is between Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.  Lionel Messi is all set to win the Ballon d'Or for the eighth time.  Erling Haaland is preparing to win the Ballon d'or after being UEFA's best player. Messi was brought to the list of awards for making Argentina the world champion and for the second time PSG won the Ligue 1.  Messi scored 40 goals in 39 matches in the Champions League and Ligue 1. In the match against Australia in the World Cup, Messi crossed the milestone of 1000 matches.  Argentina, led by Messi, was able to win the world title by defeating France, who was the current champion.

Erling Holland is a star who has reached the top of world football from Norway.  Most goals scored in a single season in the English Premier League.  Holland scored 36 goals in 35 matches.  He scored a total of 52 goals for City last season.  He played the biggest role in City winning the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.  For the first time in the Man City's history, Haaland's name will be etched in golden letters.  Holland came to Manchester City as a defensive player.  Coach Pep Guardiola moved the Holland talent into midfield.  Later, Holland was busy rewriting history at City Jersey. Argentinian player Emiliano Martinez will compete in the list for the Lev Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper.  The Argentinian goalkeeper is also on the list for the Ballon d'Or award.  Yassin Bono, who left Selvia and joined Al Hilal, and Manchester City goalkeeper Anderson are also on the list.  Andra Onana, who has made it to the Ballon d'Or list, will also compete to be the best goalkeeper. UEFA winner Aitana Bonmati has been named in the women's list.  Bonmati is credited for his impressive performances for Barcelona and for Spain at the World Cup.  German actress Alexandra Popp is another star who made it to the list.

Jessica Pegula rallies to win opening match of WTA Finals in Cancun against Elena Rybakina The American won 10 of the last 12 games from 5-3 down in the first set of the tournament's opening match.  Twelve months ago, Jessica Pegula's debut at the WTA Finals couldn't have gone worse. The American qualified for the season-ending championships in singles and doubles, a feather achievement in her cap, but didn't win a match in either event. Reflecting on her and Coco Gauff's (who also went 0-6 last year) return to the WTA's capstone event on its eve, Pegula said that the pair could parlay lessons learned from 2022 into a better experience in 2023. “I think last year we were really burnt out,” Pegula told reporters Saturday. “It was probably an accumulation of doing a lot with singles and doubles, coming up along the end of the year, having a good year, but sometimes you’re not used to having that consistent, full year. “I think we feel better this year. I have mentally prepared myself a little bit better on what to expect coming in here. Now that it’s not my first Finals, I know what to expect, I know what’s going to happen. Hopefully, I can use that as better preparation this year mentally and physically and have some better results.”

Consider the first box checked: Opening the tournament against Elena Rybakina in Bacalar Group play Sunday evening, the American won 10 of the last 12 games from 5-3 down in a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
If preparation was crucial coming in, another p-word was also integral to Pegula's one-hour, 23-minute win: poise. She handled the Kazakh's biggest weapon, her serve, with aplomb, breaking five times. While wind, a much-talked about weather condition in advance of Sunday's opening day, wasn't as much of a factor as expected, Rybakina still totaled 35 unforced errors (to Pegula's 16). The American also dealt well with adversity in her game: Despite only landing 49% of her first serves in the win, she won 80% of the points played behind it, and defend her second well. She's now beaten the Wimbledon champion three times in four career meetings, and with a doubles match alongside Gauff still to come on Sunday evening, Pegula no doubt welcomed an efficient win, too.

"I've already done better than last year, so that's kind of a monkey off my back," Pegula said afterwards. "She's really tough and she's been playing some really great tennis ... there were a couple of errors that she made, and luckily, I was able to capitalize right at the right time and take that, and ride the momentum." She now boasts 42 hard-court wins on the season, which leads the WTA, and is the early pace-setter in a group that also features world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari. After Pegula wins, Aryna Sabalenka loses one game to Maria Sakkari at WTA Finals
The world No. 1 is the first player in 12 years to win a round-robin match at the event with the loss of one game. Jessica Pegula improved to 48-0 in 2023 when winning the first set, grabbing 10 of the last 12 games to beat Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-2 in the opening match of round-robin singles competition at the WTA Finals on a windy Sunday night. Neither woman had won a match previously at the season-ending championships for the women's tennis tour. Pegula went 0-3 in Fort Worth, Texas, a year ago, while Rybakina is making her debut appearance at the event for the top eight players in the world.
